Jesus could have saved himself from the cross but did not do so for a special reason. If you knew what the purpose of the cross was then you would understand why he had to go through it. Jesus chose chose to humble himself to the plan and will of God.
“He was oppressed, though he humbled himself and opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before her shearers is dumb; yea, he opened not his mouth.”
Isaiah 53:7 Tanakh Jewish Bible
Isaiah 53:7 foretells Jesus’ humility “as a lamb to the slaughter” before his accusers. He was falsely accused but said nothing in his defense. Matthew 27 is the fulfillment of that prophecy:
‘Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
Matthew 27:13-14
“Jesus had previously demonstrated that he could disappear among the crowds if he wanted but it is clear he allowed his crucifixion to go ahead so that the scriptures could be fulfilled:
” When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. But passing through their midst, he went away.Luke 4:28-30
Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”John 18:35-36
Why didn’t angels come and rescue Jesus from the crucifixion?
“And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”
Matthew 26:51-54
What had the Jewish scriptures prophesied about the crucifixion of Jesus?
We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God and none of us can save ourselves from our sins through our works. Jesus became a sin-offering for us:
“All we like sheep did go astray, we turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath made to light on him the iniquity of us all.”
Isaiah 53:6 Tanakh Jewish Bible
Jesus is the ‘arm of the Lord’ who bared his soul unto DEATH’ , ‘and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the SINS OF MANY.
Isaiah 53:12 Tanakh Jewish Bible
